Artist Statement.
Having dyslexia has its positive and negative aspects. The positive side is that I am able to create personal artwork which is meaningful to me deriving from the condition of dyslexia. The negative is that it is often difficult to read, write and express myself through verbal communication. Dyslexia also makes me view imagery in a totally different and unique way and so this year, I set myself the challenge to explore for others the way in which I perceive the world.I have explored a more meaningful way to express myself through my dyslexia in order to portray to the audience the way words appear to me whilst reading. And so, I have created different pieces to show the audience my experience of how I view reading materials. Since reading, writing and communication are such a great challenge for me, I wanted to translate these challenges into my art work by using text to create pieces to demonstrate the difficulties I encounter on a daily basis. Through these works, the viewer is able to clearly understand the challenges I face when reading.Visual stress is also a struggle in my everyday life. This is also a form of dyslexia which affects me in a number of ways. The text blurs, moves around the page and creates mostly circular shapes. And so these pieces are representations of what I see when reading books, magazines or short texts.I have been able to use my dyslexia to my advantage and incorporate it into my art work. By overlapping, cutting and removing text in books, I have created an accurate depiction of my dyslexia. The use of video and photography has also played a significant role in my work as I am able to record and document myself reading to create a sound art piece which enables others to understand what I experience in day to day life. Through these techniques I have produced many pieces which demonstrate the significance dyslexia has on my life. This has not only helped others to understand this uncommon condition, but it has also enabled me to understand and appreciate the unique way I view my surrounding environment.

I am a student studying a BA(hons) degree in fine art.
